A summer house where Lorca wrote some of his works, a restaurant that recalls the gatherings at the Café Alameda and a statue of Washington Irving among the trees of the Alhambra. Granada keeps ties with literature that you can discover on foot, step inside to see, or take home in the form of a book.
A UNESCO City of Literature since 2014, Granada combines that heritage with bookshops, poetry readings and meetings with writers throughout the year. This selection suggests a first visit: Lorca's houses, Francisco Ayala's personal library, poems among the gardens of the Carmen de los Mártires and a trip out to the villages of the Vega.
To start placing the poet in the city, you can take the guided tour we list on Turismo Literario. On its page you'll find the itinerary and the conditions of the activity.
The City Council's route brings together places connected with the writer in the city. It can help you plan an independent walk and choose which interiors to visit. Set aside separate time for the houses and exhibitions: walking around them is not the same as going inside.
In the gardens of the Carmen de los Mártires, plaques with poems invite you to stop, read and keep walking. The trail brings together winners of the Ciudad de Granada–Federico García Lorca International Poetry Prize and writers linked to this place, such as Saint John of the Cross and José Zorrilla. The plaques include QR codes with more information.
You can walk it on your own during the garden's opening hours, and admission is free. The guided visits announced in the city programme are one-off events: check the calendar if you want to join one.
Where: Carmen de los Mártires, paseo de los Mártires, s/n.
Between 1926 and 1936, the García Lorca family spent their summers in this house, now part of the park named after the poet. Inside, rooms and objects from family life have been preserved, including Federico's piano. It was here that he worked on plays such as Blood Wedding and Yerma.
This is the visit to get close to Lorca's domestic and creative space. It is done in guided time slots; check availability before you go.
Where: Federico García Lorca park, calle Virgen Blanca, s/n.
On the Plaza de la Romanilla, near the cathedral, this centre looks after Lorca's legacy and brings it to the public through exhibitions and activities. Unlike the houses, here the visit is built around its programme.
Admission to the exhibitions is free, according to the centre. The archive and the library have specific access conditions and are not part of an open visit to all its collections.
Where: Plaza de la Romanilla, s/n.
The García Lorca family lived on Acera del Darro between 1909 and 1916, during the writer's formative years in Granada. The Casa Cultural invites you to explore that period through the guided tour Aquellos ojos míos de 1910, which focuses on Federico and his family circle.
To see it inside you need to check the time slots and book. The advertised visit lasts between 75 and 90 minutes and only goes ahead with a minimum of 10 participants. Check the time slots before counting on it in your itinerary.
Where: Acera del Darro, 50.
The Alcázar Genil palace houses the foundation that preserves and promotes the legacy of Francisco Ayala. The visit lets you see the writer's personal library, the room devoted to his mother, the painter Luz García-Duarte, the qubba of Muslim origin and the gardens.
It's a chance to get to know another of Granada's great writers and step into a lesser-known space in the city. According to the Foundation, individual visits are free and need no booking during opening hours; groups must arrange their visit in advance.
Where: Alcázar Genil palace, calle Rey Abu Said, s/n.
Information and visiting conditions
To learn about his relationship with the city — a virtual exhibition, not a booking for a guided route.
On the boulevard of the Avenida de la Constitución, Lorca has his place among the sculptures devoted to figures from Granada. You can stop to look at it during a walk, without depending on museum opening hours.
Where: Boulevard of the Avenida de la Constitución.
The historical figure of Mariana Pineda inspired one of Lorca's plays. Her monument stands in a square the poet knew well, close to the family home on the Acera del Casino. A stop that links the memory of this woman with her presence in Lorca's theatre.
Where: Plaza de Mariana Pineda. Public space.
The author of Tales of the Alhambra has a statue in the Alhambra woods. He's shown with a notebook in his hand, a reminder of the traveller who turned the stories and legends of the monument complex into literature.
It's a stop to add to your walk through the woods. Visits to the palaces and other ticketed areas are arranged separately.
Where: Alhambra woods.
An independent bookshop in the Realejo that focuses on small publishers and on writers linked to Granada. Its selection includes fiction, poetry, feminism and other subjects. It's a particularly good fit if you want to discover the city's contemporary writing.
Where: calle Molinos, 22.
For those who enjoy hunting for used, old or hard-to-find books. Its catalogue combines fiction, poetry and essays with a section of rare and collectible books, as well as titles related to Granada. A different kind of visit from looking for new releases.
Where: calle Gracia, 33.
It has two shops in Granada, on San Juan de Dios and Gran Capitán. Its general catalogue brings together new releases and backlist titles, with fiction, poetry, essays and children's and young adult books. You can check its shops for a specific book during your stay.
Where: calle San Juan de Dios, 20, and calle Gran Capitán, s/n.

The bookshop on Obispo Hurtado offers general literature, new releases and books for children and young readers. Its presence at the Book Fair means you can also find it in the programme of that literary event.
Where: calle Obispo Hurtado, 5.
Its programme includes book clubs, meetings with writers and book exhibitions. Among its 2026 activities are readings of fiction and plays: it's worth checking which activities coincide with your trip.
The clubs may require registration and have limited places; not every session is open to occasional participants.
Where: calle Profesor Sainz Cantero.
It shares a building with the Provincial Library but has its own programme. Besides its role in preserving Andalusia's bibliographic heritage, it organises book clubs and activities such as literary routes. It's a second calendar to check, although it doesn't mean going to another building.
Where: calle Profesor Sainz Cantero.
El Rinconcillo, a literary gathering whose members included Lorca and other artists and intellectuals, used to meet at the Café Alameda. The Chikito restaurant now stands on the site of that café and remembers the group with a life-size sculpture of the poet inside.
It's a working restaurant: you can add it to your trip as a food stop and ask about that literary corner.
Where: Plaza del Campillo.
It brings together bookshops and publishers with presentations, book signings and activities for all ages. You can combine strolling among the stalls with events centred on books.
Last edition held: from 23 April to 3 May 2026.
Programme and upcoming editions

Fuente Vaqueros and Valderrubio are outside the city. Their house museums can be part of a trip around the Vega, arranging transport and visits in advance.
The house where Federico García Lorca was born is now a museum devoted to his memory. It's the starting point for learning about his early years and the writer's relationship with his home village.
Another of the family homes linked to the poet's childhood and youth. The visit brings you closer to the rural setting that left its mark on his work, and it can be combined with the House of Bernarda Alba in the same village.
The home of Francisca Alba and her family, which inspired Lorca, opened as a museum in 2018. It lets you see the real setting the play was born from and explore the relationship between its residents and the characters of the drama.
On Turismo Literario you'll find a route through Fuente Vaqueros and Valderrubio and another focused on Lorca, the Civil War and the places of memory in Víznar and Alfacar. Check each page to confirm the route, the starting point and what services are included.
