The house

The Lorca family's country house

Picture a boy who sees a little travelling theatre for the first time and discovers, that very day, what will become his calling. That boy was Federico García Lorca, and it happened in Valderrubio, the village in the Vega de Granada where his family had their country house.

The Federico García Lorca House Museum is a traditional two-storey farmhouse, built on the foundations of the house that the poet's father turned into the family's country home between 1905 and 1909. Federico went to school here, and the family kept coming to spend their summers here until 1926.

Today you can explore the house, its courtyard and the old stable, now a theatre, in the same village where Lorca found the story of The House of Bernarda Alba.

What you'll see on the visit

The farmhouse

It was both a home and a store for the harvest. Next to it is a smaller, simpler house, where the caretakers lived.

The courtyard and the old stable

Both houses open onto a large, bright courtyard, with the animal pens and the old stable, now a theatre and temporary exhibition space. The courtyard also holds sculptures by Eduardo Carretero: his own bust, Federico's, and the one dedicated to Rosa Luxemburg.

The posters of the Rinconcillo de Cristobica

The cámara, the upstairs storeroom, displays the collection of posters from the International Puppet Festival held at the house every year. The festival revives the títeres de cachiporra, the slapstick puppet shows starring Cristobica, which Lorca, Falla and Hermenegildo Lanz rescued in 1923.

Isabel García Roldán's mosaics

Also in the cámara you'll see the mosaics made by Federico's cousin from the pieces of marble that her husband, the sculptor Eduardo Carretero, discarded as he carved.

Additional information

The guided tour

The guided tour in Spanish lasts about two hours and covers this house and the Bernarda Alba House too, so in a single morning you get to see both of the village's house museums. If you'd rather go at your own pace, you can visit just Lorca's house with an audio guide app.

And if you want to get here from Granada, the Federico García Lorca literary route through Fuente Vaqueros and Valderrubio takes you by minibus to this house, to Bernarda Alba's and to the poet's birthplace.
