The house

The farmhouse in the Granada Vega

Federico García Lorca used to say that his village, Fuente Vaqueros, was built on water. It was here, in this farmhouse in the Vega de Granada, that he was born on 5 June 1898.

The house was built in 1880, when his father, Federico García Rodríguez, married his first wife. After he was widowed he married again, this time a schoolteacher from the village, Vicenta Lorca Romero, who would become the poet's mother and who passed on her love of literature to him. Federico spent his early years here; the family then lived in Valderrubio, a few kilometres away, and in 1909 settled in Granada.

In 1986, fifty years after he was murdered at the start of the Civil War, the house opened as a museum. It is run by the Federico García Lorca Trust, which looks after the house and keeps the poet's memory alive.

What you'll see on the visit

The courtyard and the well

At the centre of the house is the courtyard, with the well and the pump for drawing water. If you look into the well, you'll see what Federico meant: his village was built on water.

The family rooms

The rooms are full of reminders of the family and of the childhood years that shaped his character and his work.

The Granary Room

The old granary hosts temporary exhibitions on Lorca's many facets. A new one opens every 5 June, his birthday.

The Anna María Dalí room

It's named after Salvador Dalí's sister, who in 1987 donated to the house the mementoes of her friendship with the poet: letters, photographs and inscribed first editions.

Juan de Loxa's office

At the end of the visit is the former office of the poet Juan de Loxa, the museum's first director. The collection that now makes up the house's archive began on its shelves.
