The house

The house that inspired the play

Did you know that the house of Bernarda Alba really existed? It's in Valderrubio, in the Vega de Granada, and it belonged to Frasquita Alba Sierra, the woman who became Bernarda in Federico García Lorca's play.

Lorca knew at first hand what went on within these walls and, with his enormous imagination, turned it into what he called “a drama of women in the villages of Spain”: The House of Bernarda Alba.

Today the house is a museum where you'll meet the real family behind the play, discover the symbols Lorca built it with and see how it has been translated and staged all over the world.

What you'll see on the visit

The well courtyard

This well supplied water to both Frasquita Alba's house and the one next door. From the other house, through the well, Federico would listen in silence to the Alba family's conversations. That's where it all began.

The kitchen

Here you'll learn the real story of Frasquita Alba Sierra, who is Bernarda in the play, and of José Benavides Peña, who is Pepe el Romano. With the documents on display you can compare the real family with the characters Lorca created from it.

The symbolism room

It explains the symbols Lorca uses in the play, one of the keys to his theatre and poetry. Understanding them will help you read it with fresh eyes.

The Poncia, Bernarda and Adela rooms

They recreate the closed, stifling house in which Bernarda's daughters live shut away: a convent for Poncia and a prison for Adela. Through these three characters you discover what the play is about.

The stable

Here you see how far the play has travelled: editions in Spanish and in languages such as Arabic, Greek, Japanese and Italian, photos and posters of its stage and film productions, a touchscreen with the manuscript and the censorship file, and videos of theatre, film and ballet performances.

Additional information

The theatrical tour

As well as the guided tour, which also includes the Federico García Lorca House Museum, the house offers a theatrical tour in which the play's own characters, Bernarda, her daughters and her maids, guide you through the rooms. It's run by the Teatreves Teatro company, which announces the dates on its social media (@bernardainmersivo), and it doesn't include Lorca's house.

And if you want to get here from Granada, the Federico García Lorca literary route through Fuente Vaqueros and Valderrubio includes this house, Lorca's house in Valderrubio and his birthplace.
