Introduction
Have you read The House of Bernarda Alba? Would you like to step inside the real house that inspired it and discover the family behind those five daughters shut up in the house? Well, that's exactly what this route does, and before that it also takes you to the house where Federico was born.
It all starts in Fuente Vaqueros, a village in the Vega de Granada where the poet was born on 5 June 1898. His birthplace is a farmhouse like so many others in the Vega, and today you can go inside: the kitchen, the bedrooms and the living room where he spent his first years. It tells the story of the childhood of a boy who was already passionate about puppets and music, the son of a landowner and a schoolteacher.
The family later moved to Valderrubio, the village then called Asquerosa, and that's where you'll find the Federico García Lorca House Museum, with furniture and belongings that were his. It was in Valderrubio that the young Federico became interested in theatre, and also where he found, a few metres from his own house, the story that years later would become his most performed play.
Because the last stop is the Bernarda Alba House Museum, which really did belong to Francisca Alba Sierra. It was her family that Lorca drew on to write about appearances, envy, the role of women and the longing for freedom. After this route, you'll never read The House of Bernarda Alba the same way again.
How it works
The route leaves from the city of Granada, from Plaza Mariana de Pineda, and is done by minibus with a guide: it's a half-hour journey to Fuente Vaqueros, and from there you carry on to Valderrubio.
It lasts four and a half hours in total and includes transport, the Spanish-speaking guide and admission to the three house museums, so there's nothing to buy separately and no opening times to worry about. All three houses have toilets.
The tour is run only in Spanish and isn't wheelchair accessible. You can book up to 24 hours before if there are places left, and at least two people are needed for it to go ahead.
