Introduction

Machado's years in Baeza

“A dull, cold winter afternoon. The schoolboys are studying…” Did you know that Antonio Machado spent seven years teaching in Baeza? He arrived in 1912 and stayed until 1919, and his poetry is still very much present in the historic centre of this World Heritage city.

This free tour sets off from the poet's statue and takes you to the places he used to frequent: the Nuevo Casino, where he was temporary member number 1, the former Hotel Comercio, where he stayed during his first year, the Casino de Artesanos and the pharmacy of his friend Adolfo de Almazán, with whom he held lively gatherings. You'll also pass the former convent of San Francisco, which was then the Teatro Liceo, and go past the front of the Town Hall, where he lived.

At the Instituto Santísima Trinidad you'll go into the classroom where he taught French, and in Plaza de Santa María, opposite the cathedral, you'll hear about his historic meeting with a young poet from Granada: Federico García Lorca.

And if you want to follow in Machado's footsteps, in Segovia you can visit the guesthouse where he lived later on, now a house museum.
