The house

The guesthouse on Calle de los Desamparados

Have you read Fields of Castile? Would you like to see the modest guesthouse where Antonio Machado lived for more than a decade? At the Antonio Machado House Museum in Segovia you can: the house is as simple as it was when the poet lived there, and it still has the same furniture.

Machado arrived in Segovia on 25 November 1919 to take up the chair of French at the Instituto General y Técnico in the city. A few days later he moved into Doña Luisa Torrego's guesthouse on Calle de los Desamparados, where he kept a room until 1932.

Together with other artists and writers he founded the Segovia People's University, which, years after the poet's death, acquired the house and set up the museum. It later passed into the hands of the San Quirce Academy of History and Art, which turned it into a permanent memorial to the poet. Today it is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest.

What you'll see on the visit

The poet's room

The room that was his has been kept intact. On its walls hang different versions of his portrait, taken from old photographs or captured in oil paintings, drawings and posters signed by Rafael Peñuelas, Jesús Unturbe, Álvaro Delgado and Pablo Picasso.

Leonor and Guiomar

Among the mementoes in the house are pictures of Leonor, his wife, and of Guiomar, the muse with whom he had a love affair that the guided tour tells you about.

The garden

Among rose bushes and ivy there's a copy of the bust of the poet that Emiliano Barral sculpted in 1920 and a ceramic panel by Julián López Parras.
