The house

The house on Calle de Arriba

Picture a boy whose father takes him out of school to make a shepherd of him, and who, in the hottest hours of the day, takes refuge under the fig tree in the garden at home. That boy was Miguel Hernández, and this is the house in Orihuela where he lived with his parents and his brothers and sisters, between the old Calle de Arriba and the rock of the sierra. He dedicated some of his verses to that fig tree.

Like six or seven other houses on the same street in the early 20th century, it was both a home and a pen for livestock. It is built in tiers, following the slope of the land: first the house and the courtyard, then the goat shed and, right at the top, the orchard.

Orihuela City Council bought it in 1981 and, after restoring it, opened it to the public in 1985. Today the council runs it together with the Miguel Hernández Cultural Foundation.

What you'll see on the visit

The dining room and the little sitting room

They're at the front of the house and furnished like Orihuela homes of the early 20th century, with the furniture and everyday objects of the time. Here you'll also see photographs from different moments in the poet's life.

The bedrooms, the kitchen and the “sostre”

The bedrooms and the kitchen are at the back. The house has only one room upstairs: the little loft known as the “sostre”.

The courtyard

From the kitchen you go out into the courtyard, with the well, a stone water trough, the woodshed and a garden area. On the last Saturday of every month, poetry gatherings are held here.

The goat shed and the orchard

Up a few steps you reach the shed and, through a small door, the orchard, right up against the rock of the sierra. There stands the fig tree the poet sheltered under from the sun, and it was to this orchard that he dedicated the poem “Huerto-mío”.

Additional information

The Miguel Hernández Cultural Foundation

In the house next door, at number 75, is the Miguel Hernández Cultural Foundation, which works to preserve the poet's work and make it better known. It houses the Centre for Hernández Studies and an exhibition room.
