Introduction

The Pamplona of Fiesta

Have you read Fiesta? Ernest Hemingway first came to Pamplona in 1923, without enough money to pay for a good hotel, and ended up turning the city and its San Fermín festival into a worldwide literary myth. On this Hemingway tour of Pamplona you'll discover how he came up with his novel and what the city was like in the 1920s.

It all starts in Plaza del Castillo, where you'll find Hotel La Perla, where he wasn't able to stay until the mid-1950s, when he was already an established writer, and the Café Iruña, one of his favourites. There you'll hear about his passion for San Fermín, his endless nights, his encounters with bullfighters such as Antonio Ordóñez and the places where he ate, drank and wrote.

Then you'll carry on along Paseo de Sarasate to Calle Hilarión Eslava, 5, where he rented a room with his wife, Hadley Richardson, during the 1923 San Fermín festival, and pass by the area of the former Casa Marceliano, another of his haunts. The tour ends at the Hemingway monument, next to the bullring.

And if you want to follow his trail outside Spain, there's also the Hemingway route in Cuba.
