Introduction
Have you read Diana Gabaldon's novels or seen the series? Then the name Culloden will mean far more to you than just a battle. This Outlander literary route from Inverness takes you to that battlefield and other corners of the Highlands on a full-day trip.
The trip starts in Inverness and heads first to Loch Ness, where you'll take an hour-long boat trip looking for Nessie and visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Then you'll reach Beauly, the village linked to the Lovat and Fraser families of Outlander, where you'll have half an hour free for lunch.
The last stop is Culloden Battlefield, where the 1746 battle that weighs so heavily on Jamie Fraser's story was fought. You'll walk through this old pine forest and see the headstone that commemorates Clan Fraser.
And if you're staying in Edinburgh, there's also the Outlander route from Edinburgh, through the castles where the series was filmed.
