Introduction

The city where it all began

Edinburgh was the city where J. K. Rowling brought Harry Potter to life. This free tour takes you on foot around the places that inspired her, from the lane reminiscent of Diagon Alley to the grave that gave Voldemort his name.

The meeting point is on the Royal Mile, next to the statue of David Hume, and from there you'll head down Victoria Street, a curving, colourful street whose layout is very reminiscent of Diagon Alley. A few metres away is The Elephant House, the café where Rowling wrote some chapters of the saga, sheltered from the Scottish weather.

From its windows you could see Greyfriars Kirkyard, where a certain Thomas Riddle lies at rest, although that's a name best left unsaid. The tour ends in front of George Heriot's School, whose pupils are divided into four houses. Does that ring a bell?

And if you're following Rowling's trail, in Porto there's the Harry Potter literary free tour.
