The house

The house on Calle Cano

Before Fortunata and Jacinta and the National Episodes, Benito Pérez Galdós was a boy from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He was born in 1843 in this house on Calle Cano, in the Triana district, and he spent his childhood and youth here.

The building, dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, is an example of traditional Canarian architecture and keeps its original structure and materials.

Today it's the Pérez Galdós House Museum, which is run by the Gran Canaria Island Council. It holds his personal library, original documents, and furniture and objects that belonged to the writer.

What you'll see on the visit

The courtyards

As soon as you step through the entrance you reach the house's two inner courtyards, decorated with plants. In them are a water basin, a well, a stone staircase, a palm tree and galleries made of pino tea, a wood that is very typical of old Canarian houses.

The kitchen

The stone kitchen has a wood-fired stove, and you'll also see traditional earthenware and crockery there.

The Sorolla portrait

Among the most valuable pieces in the house is the portrait of the novelist painted by Joaquín Sorolla in 1894.

His library and personal belongings

Here you'll find the writer's personal library, a wealth of original documents and the paintings, drawings, furniture and objects that the museum bought from his daughter, María Pérez Galdós Cobián, and her heirs.

The Victorio Macho sculpture

The museum is spread over two houses on Calle Cano. In the courtyard of the second is Victorio Macho's sculpture of Galdós, which used to stand on the old quay in Las Palmas.
