Introduction
Before it was Macondo, it was Aracataca. Gabriel García Márquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in this town in the Colombian Caribbean, and it inspired him to create the fictional town where much of One Hundred Years of Solitude takes place. This Macondo literary route takes you there on a full-day trip from Santa Marta.
After an hour and a half on the road, the visit starts at the Casa del Telegrafista, where several copies of his books are kept. Then you'll go into the writer's birthplace and the Iglesia de San José, the parish church where he was baptised.
While the guide tells you curious facts about his life and work, you'll also pass the school where he studied and the Remedios La Bella Municipal Library, named after one of the characters in the novel.
How it works
It's a full-day trip by minibus, with pick-up from your hotel in Santa Marta at 8:00 and return at around 16:00. Admission to the places you visit is included.
