Introduction

Brontë Country

Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë wrote Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and this one-day literary route takes you through the landscapes and places that inspired them.

The trip leaves Windermere by minibus, crosses the Lake District and stops at Cowan Bridge, where the sisters studied at the Clergy Daughters’ School, a time that marked them for life. Next you'll reach Wycoller, which inspired Ferndean Manor in Jane Eyre, and Ponden Hall, the place Emily turned into Thrushcross Grange in Wuthering Heights.

The final stop is Haworth, the village where the family lived. There you'll visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum, with the largest collection of the sisters' personal belongings, the family vault, the Black Bull Inn pub and the church where their father was parson for more than 40 years.
