Introduction
Did you know that some of the great writers of the 20th century lived, wrote and argued in just a few streets on the Left Bank of the Seine? This literary free tour of Saint-Germain-des-Prés takes you around the most literary neighbourhood in Paris.
The walk sets off from Place Pierre Lafue and passes the homes of Gertrude Stein, the writer and patron of artists, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Then you'll reach the church of Saint-Sulpice, which features in The Da Vinci Code, and the former Shakespeare and Company bookshop, a refuge for so many writers.
Of course, the neighbourhood's legendary cafés are included, such as Le Procope and Les Deux Magots, a meeting place for the most brilliant minds of the 20th century, as are the Hotel Mabillon, linked to Albert Camus, and L'Hôtel, Oscar Wilde's last refuge. The tour ends at the Pont des Arts, with views of the Seine.
