Introduction

An ancient city told by its writers

Did you know that Hans Christian Andersen spent some time in Cartagena, and that Cervantes dedicated some verses to its port? Or that Carmen Conde, the first woman to become a member of the Real Academia Española (Royal Spanish Academy), was born in an old-town street named after a very tall palm tree? You'll discover all that, and much more, on this Cartagena literary route.

The route was designed by the Carmen Conde – Antonio Oliver Trust, the City Council body that looks after the legacy of this married couple of writers, and it takes you through the squares, streets, busts and plaques of the old town, following the writers who were born in, lived in or wrote about the city: from Saint Isidore to Pérez-Reverte, by way of Galdós, Sender, Vicente Medina, María Dueñas and José Hierro.

How it works

Self-guided, free and with an audio guide

The route starts in Plaza del Cronista Isidoro Valverde, in front of the chronicler's bust, and ends at the port, opposite the two lighthouses at the harbour mouth to which Carmen Conde dedicated some verses. Along the way you cross the old town from one end to the other: Plaza de la Merced, Calle del Carmen, Plaza de San Francisco, Calle Mayor and the Muralla del Mar.

It's a self-guided itinerary, so you can do it at your own pace. What's more, the Trust gives you everything you need for free: a PDF with the route and each writer's passages to read on the spot, a map with the stops and an audio guide lasting about 47 minutes. Download them before you set off and you'll have the whole route in your pocket.
