Introduction
Before becoming a TV series, Montalbano was a character in novels. Andrea Camilleri published the first, The Shape of Water, in 1994, and the last, Riccardino, came out in 2020, a year after his death: 28 novels and more than 30 million copies sold. They're all set in Vigàta, an invented town that Camilleri based on Porto Empedocle, where he was born, and since 1999 Italian public television has been bringing them to the screen. This Inspector Montalbano literary route takes you to the series' locations on a full-day trip from Catania, starting with the seafront house in Punta Secca that, for millions of viewers, is the inspector's home.
That's where the route begins, in front of a facade that has become a real symbol for Montalbano fans. If you like, you can have lunch on your own at the Da Enzo restaurant, the setting for several scenes and famous for its Sicilian cooking.
Then you'll explore the Baroque streets of Ragusa Ibla, a World Heritage Site where several scenes were filmed, and finish in Scicli, where you'll visit the Town Hall, which serves as the police station in the series.
How it works
It's a full-day trip by minibus, with pick-up from your hotel in Catania, Aci Trezza or Aci Castello and drop-off back at the same spot.
