The house
In 1610, Lope de Vega paid 9,000 reales for the house at number 11, Calle Cervantes, right in the heart of Madrid's Barrio de las Letras. He lived in it for the last 25 years of his life, and it was here that he wrote some of his great works.
When he bought it, his second wife, Juana de Guardo, was still alive. But this house was also the scene of his greatest losses: his son Carlos Félix, his wife Juana and his last great love, Marta de Nevares, all died here.
The house dates from 1578 and has been altered many times since. It opened as the Lope de Vega House Museum in 1935, the same year it was declared a historic-artistic monument, and today it offers a glimpse into Lope's life and the customs of the Spanish Golden Age.

What you'll see on the visit
It's one of the highlights of the visit: this is where the writer worked during his years in the house.
For some rooms, like this one, no records survived, so they were recreated from descriptions in Lope's own works.
It was one of the writer's favourite places, and today it's the most peaceful corner of the house.
The guide shows you which parts of the original house have survived to this day and which rooms are still where they were in Lope's time.
Additional information
As well as the visits, the house museum organises free activities for children and adults: workshops, shows, literary talks and exhibitions. Almost all of them need booking and places go quickly, so it's a good idea to check the programme on the house museum's website well in advance.
