The house
Did you know that Carmen Martín Gaite wrote Retahílas in her father's study, in a stone house in the Madrid sierra? It's the family home in El Boalo, where the Salamanca-born writer spent weekends and summers, and today you can visit it.
It was built by her father, José Martín López, and many of the writers of the 1950s generation, Carmen's generation, passed through it. Today it keeps the furniture, photographs and mementoes of several generations of the family, as well as her father's library and that of the Martín Gaite sisters.
It is also the headquarters of the Martín Gaite Foundation, which her sister, Ana María, set up in 2014, and thanks to the foundation and the Town Council it can be visited. Carmen is buried in El Boalo. If you love her work, don't miss it!
