Introduction
Did you know that Gabriel García Márquez's ashes rest in Cartagena de Indias? This literary free tour takes you around the city of Gabo, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature, and to the corners that left their mark on his work.
The walk starts next to Botero's sculpture Gertrudis, in Plaza de Santo Domingo, and heads first to the University of Cartagena, where you'll visit the Claustro de la Merced, which is exactly where Gabo rests. Then you'll pass the Hotel Santa Clara, a place full of legends that inspired Gabo in some of his stories.
In the San Diego neighbourhood, among streets that inspired his stories, you'll discover the anecdotes that shaped Gabo's life in the city and the nods to One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in the Time of Cholera and Of Love and Other Demons. The walk ends at the Portal de los Dulces, surrounded by stalls where his books are still sold.
And to get to know the town where he was born, from Santa Marta you can take the Macondo literary route through Aracataca.
