The house
Have you read Blindness? Did you know it was written on Lanzarote, among volcanic landscapes? At the José Saramago House Museum, in the village of Tías, you can explore the home where Portugal's only Nobel laureate in Literature spent his last 18 years.
Saramago came to the island with his wife, the journalist Pilar del Río, after the controversy in Portugal over The Gospel According to Jesus Christ. It was love at first sight: on the very day they landed to visit some relatives, they started talking about building their house here, which the writer called “a house made of books”.
Saramago died here in 2010, and nine months later the house opened as a museum. Today you can explore his study, his library and his garden.
The house's library, Saramago's “house made of books”.
What you'll see on the visit
This is where he wrote Blindness. It holds his family photographs, works by the authors he admired and the documents from the Nobel Prize.
Here you'll find his personal book collection and the desk where he wrote his last two novels, The Elephant's Journey and Cain.
The kitchen holds photographs of the distinguished visitors who came to the house, and it was in the bedroom that the writer died in 2010. Its walls also display works by artists such as César Manrique, Pepe Dámaso, Manolo Millares, Antoni Tàpies and Oscar Niemeyer.
It has Portuguese olive trees and views of the ocean and the island's volcanic landscape.
