Introduction

In the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes

Did you know that Sherlock Holmes is one of the literary figures most closely linked to London? This Sherlock Holmes literary free tour takes you to the real places that inspired the adventures of the detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle.

The walk starts by the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain in Piccadilly Circus and takes in historic hotels, alleyways, period gentlemen's clubs and monuments that appear in stories such as The Hound of the Baskervilles, A Scandal in Bohemia and The Adventure of the Illustrious Client. You'll also pass the National Gallery and the only Sherlock Holmes themed pub in London, one of the fans' favourite stops.

The guide will also take you to locations where his films were shot and tell you fun facts about the actors who have played him, from Jeremy Brett and Christopher Plummer to Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch. And about his creator, too: his relationship with Oscar Wilde and Harry Houdini, or his passion for spiritualism and science. The tour ends next to the Lyceum Theatre.
